Microsoft Hyper-V and In-Depth VSS Integration

The soon to be released DataCore VSS client for Windows 2003 and 2008 is used to generate SAN level snapshots of disks used by "VSS aware" applications. Applications such as Microsoft Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010, SQL Server 2005 and 2008 are VSS aware. The DataCore VSS client can "quiesce" these applications and simultaneously trigger a snapshot within SANsymphony-V.

The DataCore VSS client ensures that your snapshots are "crash consistent" or "transactionally correct" and ready to be backed up or presented to a standby or development server.

Microsoft Hyper-V is also VSS aware and compatible with the DataCore VSS client. When SANmelody creates a VSS SAN level snapshot, not only is the virtual machine quiesced, but so is the VSS aware application within the virtual machine.

This ensures that if you have Hyper-V powered virtual machines running Exchange, SQL Server, Active Directory, etc you can snapshot them properly and in a state that’s ready for backup, failover or rollback.
